Dermaplaning is safe for most skin types, especially those with sun damage, fine lines or very dry skin and dull skin. It is not recommended however if you have highly reactive, sensitive or inflamed skin conditions, such as active acne (although dermaplaning can be used to reduce the appearance of acne scars once your skin has healed). It's also best avoided if you have rosacea or keratosis pilaris, as it may irritate your skin.

No, one of the key benefits of dermaplaning is to remove the buildup of dead skin cells that can block pores and cause spots and pimples.

No, there's no need to worry, dermaplaning will not make your hair grow back any thicker or darker. Although when your hair starts to grow back it may feel a bit different and may initially seem to be a bit thicker, this is simply because the end of each hair has been cut by the scalpel, rather than tapering off. In fact it will be the same texture and thickness as before and will grow at the same speed.

There's no downtime after needed after dermaplaning. Some slight redness can occur, but this doesn't happen in all cases. You could pop in for the treatment during your lunch break if you wish and go straight back to work.

We know that the thought of a scalpel being used on your face sounds pretty frightening, but the procedure does not actually hurt at all! You will be able to feel it, but it's similar to shaving any other part of you body. It's really important that it is carried out by fully trained skin care experts like those at Blakes to avoid any unwanted nicks or scratches.

Your skin barrier will be slightly more vulnerable initially, so as with many skin care treatments, you will need to wear a high SPF to protect your skin as it will be especially sensitive to UV damage. At your appointment we will also recommend the best moisturising products to help to sooth and repair your skin. We stock Dermalogica skin care products which will be ideal for keeping your skin moisturised and comfortable after dermaplaning. Although it may be tempting to apply makeup to your newly smooth skin, we'd recommend letting it breathe and settle for a day or so before you apply any foundation.

Dermaplaning results can last up to four weeks, keeping you glowing all month long. We recommend waiting at least a month between treatments, but if you have sensitive skin it may be advisable to leave it slightly longer. We'll advise you at your initial consultation, once we have assessed your skin.

Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure which gently removes dead skin cells on the outer surface of the skin.

Using gentle abrasion from hundreds of microcrystals in a small stainless steel head, the treatment removes layers of dead skin cells from all areas of your face and body. At the same time, elastin and collagen fibres are stimulated by light suction, which also removes the old skin cells. The result is visibly smoother, softer, firmer and more radiantly youthful skin.

Our trained therapists work with several different sizes and specifications of microdermabrasion head and will specially select the correct combination to suit your skin, either on your face or elsewhere on your body.

Microdermabrasion can help in the treatment of a wide range of skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles including the delicate area around the eyes
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Acne scarring
  • Enlarged pores and dull Skin
  • Inflamed and congested skin
  • Stretch marks

We recommend a course of treatments for best results, but you will see an immediate improvement after just one treatment.

Many people book a ‘one off’ treatment to brighten their skin and make sure it looks its best before a special event like a wedding or other important occasion.

Microdermabrasion can be used for nearly all skin types and on all areas of the body and face.

At an initial consultation we will discuss your skin concerns and advise you further.

Microdermabrasion is a safe and gentle treatment, but immediately afterwards your skin may feel slightly tight with mild redness. It's important that you use a good moisturiser with SPF after your treatment - we will provide you with full after care advice when you come in for your consultation.

For best results we recommend a series of treatments at 4 weekly intervals. After this, treatments are usually carried out every 8 to 10 weeks.

On average you will need to have your eyebrows done every four weeks. However, the length of time varies between clients as it depends on how quickly your hair grows and how well your hair holds colour.

Most people get the HD Brows look immediately. However, sometimes it takes a few visits for your brows to be perfected.

Yes. We can put you on a regrowth programme that will train your brows into shape over a course of visits. To speed up your regrowth and make your brows look better between visits, HD Brows products are available that will stimulate growth and make your eyebrows appear full and more defined.

Absolutely. Brow shapes are tailored to the individual, as they have to suit your look and personality. Your brows can be made dark or light, thick or thin, sharp or soft. Your input is important in deciding the best shape and look for you. Your HD Brows specialist will consider your hair growth, look, colouring and face shape when guiding you on the right eyebrow design for you.

There are so many blonde shades to choose from, and of course you can pick any blonde hue you'd like to try. The hair experts at our salon in Canterbury can also advise you on the perfect blonde colour for you, bearing in mind your skin tone and hair colour. Here is a quick guide: Light Skin Tones – Try out golden, strawberry or light blonde colours. Medium Skin Tones – Choose honey or golden shades, beige blonde, and light blondes with warm tones. Dark Skin Tones – Warmer, darker blondes such as caramels and golden blondes will suit you best. If you’ve found a blonde look you love, we’d recommend that you bring in an image of it to show to your stylist so that we can turn your idea into reality.

Some of the most popular blonde styles here at Blakes Salon are balayage and highlights. In terms of colours, silver-grey tones, platinum ice-white blondes and golden blondes are very popular right now. Alternatively, why not try a fashionable rose-gold look or a retro buttery blonde?

Yes, they can! It’s worth bearing in mind though that this will take more time and effort to create and maintain. At your hair colour consultation and you can find out about the process, time, colour that will be achieved as well as the price.

At Blakes we will always strive to maintain the health and condition of your hair as you go blonde. We’re able to do this because advances in hair care products mean we can protect and even strengthen your hair during the colouring process. We’d recommend that you try Olaplex as part of your colour treatment. This is a revolutionary treatment designed to give your hair strength, shine and more vibrant colour. Click here to find out more about Olaplex and the other hair conditioning treatments we offer here at Blakes. To maintain the condition of your hair at home, you may like to consider purchasing one of our MoroccanOil products. These products strengthen your hair with natural proteins and omega-3. MoroccanOil is easy to use because it can be added to other treatments or, if used on its own, simply add a few drops to towel-dried hair and then blow dry or dry naturally.

Of course, we appreciate all hair colours here at our salon in Canterbury, but as this article is about blondes, here are just a few reasons you might want to join the blonde brigade! Each shade of blonde has its own unique character. Blondes are a brilliant way to add elements of your personality to your hair, creating looks that range from innocent to sun-kissed beach styles. The transition to blonde from darker hues is exciting because it opens up a whole range of interesting colours to play around with. Temporary tints such as quirky pastel shades or hair chalks show up really well on blonde hair, so you can almost try out a different shade for every mood and outfit. Blonde shades have always been iconic – for decades, film stars from Marilyn Monroe to Cameron Diaz have been showcasing the look. In choosing to go blonde, you too can wield the power to turn heads!

If you choose an all-over new hair colour, you’ll need to pay a visit to our salon to have your root regrowth touched up every eight weeks or so. Regrowth with highlights is far less obvious, but to keep your colour looking fabulous, you may want have a T-section to cover-up your roots every eight weeks or so. Balayage is an even lower maintenance look and you may not need to pop into the salon for 2-3 months. If you want to give your colour a boost a bit sooner, we can apply toners and glossing treatments to your hair, although we’d call this a benefit more than a disadvantage - at Blakes, we make it our job to pamper you!

You can prolong the life of your blonde hair colour by using the right hair care products at home. Professional colour-enhancing or colour-safe shampoos and conditioners are a must if you want to stop your blonde shade from looking washed out or brassy. In particular, these shampoos bring out the paler, cooler shades of blonde and eliminate unwanted yellow or brassy tones. We recommend Paul Mitchell violet tinted Platinum Blonde shampoo.

If you've had a disaster with a home hair dye, there’s no need to panic! We can correct your hair colour and change it back to something you’ll love. Book in as soon as possible for a consultation so we can assess your hair and work on a plan to get it back to it’s healthy self in no time… when we’ve finished, it may even look better than before it was damaged! Find out more about our hair colour correction services here.

Call our salon on 01277 768 418 or you can use our easy online booking system. Don’t forget that we offer free hair colour consultations and it is also important that you come in for a simple allergy patch test 48 hours prior to any colour appointment.

The word balayage comes from the French, meaning “to sweep”. The technique hand-painting, or sweeping, soft highlights throughout your hair free-hand, allowing us to place your highlights exactly where they will look best. The aim is to give your hair a beautiful natural look, as though you have been out in the sun all day. The colour is painted free-hand and there are no hard lines, meaning that the effect is subtler than that achieved with conventional foil highlights. Using balayage we can create a bespoke individual look, which can be adapted to your individual personality and style.

Yes, absolutely. Balayage looks stunning on all shades of blonde, brown, red, auburn or even grey hair. As an alternative to using natural hair colour shades such as blondes and warm caramel tones, you could also use balayage to try out fashion colours such as on-trend pastel shades.

Our skilled hair colour technicians will paint the balayage colour directly onto your hair, applying it more finely closer to your roots and with bolder brush strokes towards the ends. This freehand technique allows us to highlight areas where the sun would naturally lift your colour. This will give you a finish that’s both subtle and multi-dimensional.

The length of your appointment will depend on the length of your hair and also whether we are adding balayage throughout your hair or just a few highlights, for example to frame your face. We will advise you on how long it will take if you book in for a complimentary consultation Please note, if your hair is damaged, it will take longer to achieve the desired result. If this is the case, we will work to improve the condition of your hair so it is ready for the colouring process. We recommend using Olaplex to improve your hair’s strength and condition and produce a more vibrant colour.

Ombré produces a contrasting two-toned effect from root to tip. By contrast, balayage is a subtler technique, in which the colour is more blended and only a few sections of highlights will be added. Ombré gives colour that is dark at the roots and gradually becomes lighter towards the tips in a defined way, whereas balayage is more multi-dimensional and the colour is strongest at the tips of your hair.

There are many other hair colouring techniques and variations on balayage. These include babylights, baby balayage, root melt, root stretch, colour melt or free-hand highlights. If you’ve seen a hair look you love, bring us in an image and we’ll adapt the look for you.

Book a complimentary hair colour consultation at our Canterbury salon and we will assess the colour and condition of your hair. After this we will advise you on the results we can achieve. Your hair’s health is always our top priority, so our colour experts will tailor your hair colour to create the perfect look without damaging your hair. We may also recommend a strengthening treatment such as Olaplex.

We will also ask you to come in for a quick skin allergy test at least 48 hours before your hair colour appointment to ensure you will not suffer any adverse reactions to the colours used.

Call us on 01227 768418 to book a complimentary consultation and we will give you a no-obligation quote.

At your appointment, we will advise you on how to keep your balayage looking fabulous for longer. One of the best things about balayage is that it is relatively low maintenance – your root regrowth will be less obvious than with conventional foil highlights.

To keep your colour at its best we recommend visiting your Blakes colourist every 8-12 weeks. In addition, we would suggest a quick colour glossing touch-up session every 6 weeks. This will keep your hair looking really fresh between appointments. We also recommend using Paul Mitchell professional-quality colour care shampoo and conditioner, to keep your colour fresh and vibrant.
