Why do I need to wear sunscreen every day?

Summer Beauty Tips from Blakes Canterbury Beauty SalonSunlight contains both UVA and UVB rays, also known as radiation.  There’s an easy way to remember what kind of damage each of these types of ray can do to our skin:  UVA(GING) and UVB(URNING).

You may think you are safe from the effects of these harmful rays if you are indoors, but UVA rays can penetrate glass, even on a rainy day.   UV rays are all around us, whatever the weather and time of year – it’s possible to burn even on a cloudy day.

The effects of sun damage are cumulative and your body is able to heal only a small percentage of the impact.  Research has shown that those who use an SPF 15 or higher on a daily basis show 24% less skin aging than those who don’t use a sunscreen on a daily basis.   In addition, the Skin Cancer Foundation have 5 or more sunburns in yorr lifetime doubles your risk of developing melanoma, which highlights why it’s so important to take steps to protect your skin.

A further risk is posed by the blue light emitted by the sun, a form of radiation which is also given off by computer screens and mobile phones.  Blue light is believed by dermatologists to be able to penetrate the skin, breaking down collagen and causing free radical damage.

The good news is that regular use of an effective sunscreen can really help to protect you from the risks posed by UV rays and blue light.

How does the light from screens affect our skin?

How to protect your skin from UV light Blakes Canterbury Beauty SalonThe blue light is predominantly emitted by the sun, but it’s also given off by computer and mobile phone screens and LED lighting.  Research into the effects is still ongoing, but experts believe that as our bodies are not very good at blocking it out, blue light can have an adverse impact on a whole range of our functions from vision and sleep patterns to our skin.

It is believed that blue light is strong enough to be able to penetrate our skin, causing free radical damage and breaking down collagen (thus causing wrinkles).  It is  also thought to trigger inflammation and darken hyperpigmentation.

Using a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least an SPF 30 and reapplying it regularly will help to protect your skin from blue light.   It is also advisable to limit your exposure to screens and LED lighting, especially in the evenings – which is also beneficial for your health in general of course.

What’s the difference between chemical and physical SPFs?

A physical sunscreen contains ingredients that create a physical barrier to reflect UV rays away from the skin.  This type of sunscreen is generally better for sensitive skin.  A chemical sunscreen protects the skin differently, by absorbing UV radiation and converting it to heat.   This type of SPF is water resistant and good for use if you are working out or sweating.

How to choose the perfect SPF sunscreen

Book an appointment with our team and we’ll take you through a series of questions to help you find the perfect skin protection for you and your lifestyle.  We’ll take you through a series of questions about

  • Your typical day – will you be indoors or outdoors? Staring at a screen? Driving your car? going for a run?
  • Your environmental exposure – what’s the pollution level, temperature and humidity?
  • Your skin tone – from very fair to dark brown

From this we’ll be able to work out your overall skin risk and recommend the correct products to protect you as well as working out the average time you can spend outside before burning.   Our other tips and advice for keeping your skin healthy, include:

  • ensure you are well hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day
  • avoid going outside when the sun is at its strongest (around the middle of the day)
  • wear a hat if you do go outside
  • wear protective clothing outside.
